The question of how to cure toenail fungus is asked of many people who
suffer from this infection, and this writing will describe some of the
remedies available. But it is also important to realize that certain daily
practices must be followed to prevent the fungal infection in the first
place.
Fungus living under the nails, can infect the toenail if the area
of the toe nails are kept dark and moist, as they would be if the feet
are kept in moist shoes for prolonged periods of time. During a
person's younger life, fungal infection of the toenail may lead to a
chronic condition of athlete's foot known as Onychomycosis. This nail
fungus can be treated in a number of ways.
When a fungal infection develops on the toenail, it is first seen
as a yellow nail discolorationl, and then the color may turn brown. A
bad odor will develop and the nail becomes much thicker than
normal. White marks may be seen on the nail and debris will accumulate
underneath the nail.
Proper care of the nail would include, keeping the nails trimmed,
and removing dead tissue from underneath the nail. You may have to
remove quite a lot of nail, but it will grow back. The absence of an
adequate amount of friendly bacteria could cause growth of fungus and
disease producing bacteria. Lactobacilli can be taken by mouth to help
correct the imbalance of the bacteria in the body and prevent the
fungal growth underneath the nails.
Undecylenic acid can be brushed on the discolored nail to improve
its appearance. Unfortunately, toenail fungus will not necessarily be
resolved by removing of the nail. Any new nail growth will usually be
infected. A treatment of antifungal supplement over a period of three
months can be used to effectively deal with the infection. The
supplement contains Goldenseal root, Echinacea, garlic bulb, and Pau
D'Arco. This formula has to be used for an extended period of time.
Immune builders and acidophilus can also be used to treat the fungal
infection.
How to cure toenail fungus is always a question on the minds of a
person suffering from the infection, but what must also be considered
are the practices that will prevent the infection in the first place.
An effective way to prevent toenail fungus is to always wear sandals
when in public places such as locker rooms, showers and gyms. Never
walk around in wet socks, and keep the toenails short and well
groomed. Be careful not to pick the toenail to create breaks in the
skin that will allow fungus to enter. Eating a balanced diet and
staying healthy will allow your toenail to remain healthy and will
prevent fungal infections.
